Researchers found coronaviruses in two species of Indian bats-ICMR Study

According to a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), pathogenic coronaviruses are found in two species of Indian bats. Researchers found strains of coronaviruses, different from the novel coronavirus, in two bat species – Pteropus (the Indian Flying Fox) and Rousettus (old world fruit bats).

These bat species are found in Kerala, HP, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.

The study was published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.

The study states that there is no evidence to suggest that the bat coronaviruses can be transmitted to humans.
