President Murmu accorded the Grand Collar of Order of Timor Leste

President Droupadi Murmu was accorded the Grand Collar of Order of Timor Leste, the highest civil award by President José Ramos Horta at the Presidential Palace in Dili.

President Murmu held meetings with President Horta and Prime Minister Gusmão on bilateral cooperation.

President Droupadi Murmu said that India and Timor Leste share a deep bond of friendship and shared commitment to democracy.

East Timor was known as Portuguese Timor until November 1975, when it declared its independence.

Indonesia invaded the country on December 7, 1975, just nine days after gaining independence from the Portugal, and it subsequently became Indonesia’s 27th province.

Indonesia gave up control of East Timor in 1999 after encouragement from the United Nations, and the country became a sovereign state on May 20, 2002.

There are currently 193 Member States of the United Nations. The latest State to join the United Nations was South Sudan (in 2011).
