NEHHDC secures Oeko-Tex Certification for Eri Silk

The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) has secured the prestigious Oeko-Tex certification for its Eri Silk.

  • This certification was granted from Germany on India’s 78th Independence Day.
  • The Oeko-Tex certification is known for its stringent standards ensuring textiles are free from harmful substances and produced under environmentally friendly conditions.
  • This endorsement is crucial for Eri Silk, which is also recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Assam, highlighting its authenticity and regional importance.
  • Eri Silk is celebrated as the world’s only vegan silk due to its ethical production process.
  • Unlike conventional silk production that involves killing the moth inside the cocoon, Eri Silk allows the moth to exit naturally, preserving the cocoon for use.
  • This eco-friendly approach makes Eri Silk a symbol of sustainability in the textile industry.
  • The word Eri is derived from era, the Assamese word for castor and is made from worms that feed on the leaves of the castor oil plant.
