A Canada based mining company unearthed a massive 2,492-carat stone at Karowe Diamond Mine in northeastern Botswana.
- Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s government described the diamond as the second largest in the world.
- It’s most likely the second-largest diamond ever found within the Earth, after the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond found in South Africa in 1905.
- This is the third very large diamond unearthed at the Karowe mine in recent years. The 1,758-carat stone unearthed in 2019 was previously the largest ever mined in Botswana.
- The diamond mining industry is crucial for Botswana, with the stones accounting for well over half the financial value of the country’s total exports.
