University of Oxford tops Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020

  • The University of Oxford (UK) tops the 2020 edition of the ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings’, for the fourth consecutive year and the California Institute of Technology rose to No. 2.
  • The United States of America remained the dominant nation overall, with seven schools in the top 10 and 60 in the top 20.
  • The rankings, released on September 11, 2019 features six Indian institutes among the top 500 in the world, an increase from last year’s five institutes. However, this is for the first time since 2012 that not a single Indian institute featured among the top 300 educational institutes in the world.
  • IIT Ropar made a surprise entry and takes the number one spot among Indian varsities alongside Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc). These are the best institutes of India and strangely stand at among the top 301-350 universities of the world.
  • IIT Indore is the second best Indian institute in the world and stands in the same bracket as IISc Bangalore and IIT Ropar. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur are in the third spot; they are in the top 401-500 universities bracket.
