Hayao Miyazaki wins Magsaysay Award

Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki has won the 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Award. He is considered one of the greatest animators and directors.

  • Named after the former President of the Philippines, the awards “honor greatness of spirit shown in service to the peoples of Asia”, covering fields such as community service and arts.
  • Mr. Miyazaki, along with producer Toshio Suzuki, founded Studio Ghibli in 1985.
  • The studio has left an indelible mark on the world of animation and storytelling. It was born out of a desire to create animated films that diverged from the typical tropes of the industry at the time. Their most famous film is perhaps Spirited Away (2001).
