Digital Radio to be launched in India in 2024

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that the Central Government is bringing Digital Radio in 2024.

Addressing the annual Akashvani awards function in New Delhi on December 24, Mr Javadekar said, the audio of digital radio will be more clear and its reach will be higher.

What is Digital Radio?

  • In Digital Radio-termed as the next generation of radio broadcasting, receivers are able to receive and decode a digital program stream into a format that you can hear , offering you a superior listening experience.
  • Digital radio is transmitted using digital signals instead of analogue which AM and FM use.
  • While AM/FM radio quality suffers from interference caused by signals bouncing off walls, buildings, hills and other structures, digital radio receivers have built-in technology that cleans and filters transmissions, making interference practically non-existent. However, there may be some interference to digital radio signals in areas that are far away from a station’s transmitter.
  • Digital Radio has several advantages over the traditional analogue AM and FM services.
  • As well as the clear audio signal, digital radio transmits additional information that your radio is able to display. Examples include program information to show what is on now and coming up next, weather forecasts, news headlines, and for music stations you can see artist and track names.
