Question: Which spacecraft found more than 450 seismic signals to date on Mars, the majority of which are believed to be quakes, also called ‘Marsquake’ ?
(a) Maven Mission
(b) Insight Mission
(c) Mars Express
(d) Curiosity
Answer: b
NASA InSight spacecraft proves Mars experiences earthquakes just like Earth and discovers 450 quivers in a year – suggesting there may be life on the Red Planet. The regular seismic events mean there could be active volcanoes with liquid magma and even water under the planet – creating an environment for organisms to thrive. InSight was sent to study the deep interior of the Red Planet and touched down in November 2018 – it’s due to operate for another year. InSight is the first mission dedicated to looking deep beneath the Martian surface. Among its science tools are a seismometer for detecting quakes, sensors for gauging wind and air pressure, a magnetometer, and a heat flow probe designed to take the planet’s temperature. The InSight mission is part of NASA’s Discovery Program. It is being supported by a number of European partners, which include France’s Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA). Mars trembles more often than expected, but also more mildly. This emerged from readings of the ultra-sensitive seismometer, called the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS). Mars doesn’t have tectonic plates like Earth, but it does have volcanically active regions that can cause rumbles. The first so-called ‘Marsquake’ was recorded in April 2019. SEIS has now found more than 450 seismic signals to date, the majority of which are believed to be quakes (as opposed to data noise created by environmental factors, like wind). The largest quake was just about magnitude 4.0 in size. Two of the ‘quivers’ were big enough for scientists to be able to trace them back to their source and wer found in a geologically active area called Cerberus Fossae. This is about 1,000 miles east of Elysium Planitia where InSight was based.

Answer: c
The Madras High Court on February 21, 2020 dismissed a writ petition filed by Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy challenging a decision taken by the President concurring with Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, in favour of disbursing cash to ration cardholders instead of supplying them rice as resolved by the Council of Ministers of the Union Territory. Justice C.V. Karthikeyan held that Mr. Narayanasamy could not question the order of the President, communicated through the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, since as CM he had taken an oath to bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution and act in accordance with the Constitution and the law. Pointing out that the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, empowers the L-G to refer an issue to the President if he/she disagrees with the advice provided by the Council of Ministers, the judge said that the Act specifically states that a decision taken by the President, on such a reference, must be acted upon without posing any question or expecting an answer.
