Odisha’s largest freshwater lake, Ansupa, which silted up following drastic reduction of water inflow from the Mahanadi, may soon get a new lease of life. Chilika Development Authority, the nodal agency, has taken up restoration measures under funding from National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems. Authority is proposing to dredge the mouth of Huluhala Nullah, the lifeline of the lake, connecting Ansupa with Mahanadi and also maintain the gradient of the water channel to ensure flow of Mahanadi water into the lake.
Experts were puzzled by the death of around 40 pelicans at Kokkrebellur near Mandya. The deaths of the migratory birds have taken place over the last few months. Escherichia coli, a pathogen seen in over 90% of Egyptian vultures that migrate to northwest India to spend the winter, tend to show significant difference in resistance to antibiotics within a single season, a study has found. The findings of the study, published in the journal Infection Ecology and Epidemiology, are significant because migrating wild birds can spread drug-resistant pathogens and cause disease. The resistance to multiple antibiotics was as high as about 71.5% in E. coli collected from vultures.

Infosys, India’s second-largest software exporter, on March 15 announced that it would open a technology and innovation hub in Hartford, Connecticut and hire 1,000 American workers in the State by 2022. The Connecticut hub would focus on insurance, healthcare and manufacturing.
The current account deficit (CAD) rose to 2% of the GDP or $13.5 billion in the December quarter, up from $8 billion or 1.4% in the year-ago period, on the back of higher trade deficit, according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The CAD, which shows the difference between foreign exchange earned and spent, stood at $7.2 billion or 1.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the preceding September quarter, according to the data released by the central bank on 16 March.
India’s trade deficit narrowed to $12 billion in February, its lowest in five months, amid concerns that a global trade war could hit its exports because of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to hike import taxes on steel and aluminum. India’s merchandise exports are expected to touch $300 billion in the current fiscal year ending this month compared with $275.8 billion, mainly driven by a rise in commodity prices and strong demand in the U.S. and Europe.

A species of spotted marsupial, the eastern quoll devastated by foxes has been returned to the wild in mainland Australia for the first time in almost 50 years, in a rare and landmark conservation success story. The eastern quoll — a furry carnivore about the size of a domestic cat — disappeared from the mainland in the 1960s, but clung on in the island state of Tasmania. They have now been reintroduced to their native environment on the country’s east coast after a 15-year project to bring feral predators in one area under control.

Former Delhi batsman Prem Bhatia passed away on 13 March following prolonged illness. He was 78. In the inaugural Irani Cup match (March 18, 19, 20; 1960) at the Railway Stadium, Bhatia turned out for Rest of India against Bombay and made scores of 22 (batting at No. 9) and 50 (batting at No. 3). Interestingly, he was named 12th man for Rest of India but was allowed to bat on the insistence of Lala Amarnath, who was also a National selector.

The government has released ₹3,633 crore between 2014-15 and 2016-17 for cleaning the Ganga and beautifying ghats along it, the Lok Sabha was informed on on March 15. The construction and beautification of 228 of the total 361 ghats sanctioned have been completed till now under the Centre’s Namami Gange programme. Of these, 189 ghats are located along the river’s stretch in West Bengal. In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand works on 20, 16, two and one ghats have been completed till date respectively.

Qatar has announced a 50 million Dollars donation to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The donation was made during the extraordinary ministerial meeting of UNRWA held in Rome, Italy in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Qatar also announced that it has continued to finance projects implemented by the UNRWA, especially in the education and health sectors. Qatar is facing a nine-month boycott by its Gulf allies, which accused Doha of supporting extremist political movements in the Middle East, including Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Hamas.

Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on March 16, 2018 signed a $120 million loan agreement for completion of works for double-tracking and electrification of railways tracks along high-density corridors to improve operational efficiency of Indian railways. The tranche 3 loan is part of the $500 million multi-tranche financing facility for Railway Sector Investment Program approved by the ADB Board in 2011. The loan amount will be used to complete the ongoing works commenced under earlier tranches.

Nepal’s powerful judicial council has removed the country’s Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli for holding office despite crossing the retirement age. The judicial council said Chief Justice Parajuli’s date of birth mentioned in his identity papers and academic certificates did not match. The retirement cut-off for state officials in Nepal is 65. The council said, Chief Justice Parajuli should have retired seven months ago.
According to the new study, the famous dino-bird Archaeopteryx was fully capable of flying despite key skeletal differences from its modern cousins, though not exactly gracefully. Scientists examined Archaeopteryx’s wing architecture using state-of-the-art scanning and compared it to a range of birds, closely related dinosaurs and the extinct flying reptiles called pterosaurs. A study of two meteorites, which fell in Assam and Rajasthan over a span of 13 hours in 2017, by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has concluded that they may contain significant clues to the origins of life. On June 5, 2017 a meteorite weighing 3.014 kg fell in Natun Balijan village in Tinsukia, Assam. Thirteen hours later, early on June 6, another meteorite, weighing 2.23 kg, fell in Mukundpura village under Sadiya subdivision near Jaipur.

India’s largest power generator NTPC Ltd. has commissioned 3rd unit of the 800 MW Kudgi Super Thermal Power Station with effect from March 12, 2018. With this, the total capacity of Kudgi Super Thermal Power Station has gone up to 2400 MW. With this commissioning, the capacity of NTPC and NTPC group stands at 45300 MW and 52191 MW respectively. NTPC has 20 coal based, 7 gas based, 11 solar PV, two Hydro, one wind and 8 Subsidiaries / Joint Venture power stations. The company is currently building an additional capacity of over 20,000 MW at multiple locations in the country.

In a new initiative by the Narendra Modi government, a band of Indian officials posted to three missions in the United States now promote ‘Indian culture’ as part of diplomacy. The country’s first national academy to train police forces in effectively safeguarding the Indian shoreline will start functioning in Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat from next month. The Union Home Ministry recently sanctioned the launch of the National Academy of Coastal Policing (NACP) from a campus of Gujarat’s Fisheries Research Centre located in coastal Okha. To be run by a team of paramilitary and defence forces, the academy will sharpen the skills of marine forces of coastal States.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) will revise its guidelines for child participants of television shows, following the recent controversy over singer Angarag Papon Mahanta kissing a minor contestant of a reality programme. The guidelines were framed in 2011 before the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015, the Prevention of Child Sexual Offences Act of 2012, and the Child Labour Act of 2016. So guidelines will be revised as per the new laws.
The question paper packets of the West Bengal Secondary Examinations have been fitted with a microchip which will send an alert to its server as soon as the seal is broken. As per the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education chief, the microchip will be put on a sticker on the sealed envelope containing the question papers. The specially designed envelopes will be GPS-enabled, enclosed by a seal. If the seal is broken, the data will be passed on to the central server at the control room at the Board office.

India’s Akhil Sheoran has clinched the gold medal in men’s 50 metre rifle 3 position at the ISSF World Cup in Mexico. In the event being held at Guadalajara, Sheoran shot 455.6 in the final on 11 March to pip Austria’s Bernhard Pickl to second place with 452. Sheoran’s gold was India’s fourth of the competition and makes it almost certain that the country would finish on top of the medals tally for the first time in an ISSF World Cup.
Reigning Asian champion Navjot Kaur has become world No 2 in the women’s 65 kg category in the latest rankings released by the United World Wrestling. Navjot became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the recent Asian Championship in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. This is Navjot’s career-best ranking. The World Health Organisation says that 423,000 Indians die each year of tuberculosis (TB), which is about 1,159 people a day. As standard TB-drug treatments are ineffective for nearly 1,30,000 of the 2.8 million TB patients in India, two relatively-new and powerful drugs, bedaquiline and delamanid, could benefit such patients with drug-resistant (DR) TB. With a success rate of approximately 70%, these drugs are now being called ‘magic bullets’. The Indian government says that nearly 13,000-20,000 patients qualify for treatment with these drugs.

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad have been successful in keeping tomatoes fresh and without any microbial spoilage for as long as 30 days. This was possible thanks to the food packaging material developed by a two-member team led by Dr. Mudrika Khandelwal from the institute’s Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering. The food packaging material is made of bacterial cellulose impregnated with silver nanoparticles. Bacterial cellulose was first prepared by using Gluconacetobacter xylinus bacteria to produce semicrystalline cellulose nanofibre from a standard glucose media.
