- NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission has spotted three huge Jupiter-like extrasolar planets that are orbiting close to their giant or sub-giant stars.
- TESS Mission spotted these exoplanets, named TOI-2337b, TOI-4329b and TOI-2669b, that have short-period orbits around giant stars.
- One of them, TOI-2337b, is likely to get absorbed by its star in less than a million years, the shortest for any known exoplanet. The study helps in understanding the past, present and future of planets.
- This is sooner than the time estimated for any other currently known planet.
- The data from TESS was studied using W. M. Keck Observatory’s High-Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) in Hawai?i and the existence of the exoplanets was confirmed.
What are exoplanets?
- According to NASA, all of the planets in our solar system orbit around the Sun. Planets that orbit around other stars are called exoplanets.
- Exoplanets are very hard to see directly with telescopes. They are hidden by the bright glare of the stars they orbit.
