What is shinrin-yoku (forest bathing)?

In Japan, people practice something called forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku. Shinrin in Japanese means “forest,” and yoku means “bath.” So shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses.

  • Shinrin-yoku is not exercise, or hiking, or jogging. It is simply being in nature, connecting with it through our senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.
  • Shinrin-yoku is like a bridge. By opening our senses, it bridges the gap between us and the natural world.
  • The reason most of the well planned large cities in the world have parks, trees, and pockets of urban jungle is because spending time in an urban park is found to have a positive impact on a person’s sense of well-being.
  • Aside from city parks, the more in-depth practice of “forest bathing” has been found to lower blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of harmful hormones — like cortisol, which the human body produces when it’s stressed.
