Relay cropping is a method of multiple cropping where one crop is seeded into standing second crop well before harvesting of second crop.
Under this cropping pattern, second crop is planted after the first crop has reached its reproductive stage of growth but before it is ready for harvest.
- Relay cropping may solve a number of conflicts such as inefficient use of available resources, controversies in sowing time, fertilizer application, and soil degradation.
- In this type cropping, maize and legumes are planted on different dates and grow together for at least a part of their life cycle.
