Why in the News?
The Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy informed the Lok Sabha on November 19, 2019 that The National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) project will be operational by December 31, 2020.
What is it?
National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) is an ambitious counter terrorism programme, which will utilise technologies like Big Data and analytics to study and analyse the huge amounts of data from various intelligence and enforcement agencies to help track suspected terrorists and prevent terrorist attacks.
It will enable multiple security and intelligence agencies to access a database related to immigration entry and exit, banking and telephone details, among others, from a common platform.
The project, initially started in 2009 with a budget of ₹2,800 crore, is an online database for collating scattered pieces of information and putting them together on one platform.
NATGRID has developed application software for proof of technology (POT), which is yet to be fully rolled out.
NATGRID will link 10 user agencies with certain databases that would be procured from 21 organisations. The agencies concerned include the Intelligence Bureau, local police, and revenue and customs departments.
While NATGRID’s data recovery centre in Bengaluru has been constructed, its South Delhi office, which got the nod of the environment watchdog in 2015, is nearing completion. (Source: The Hindu and Business Standard)

नेशनल इन्फॉर्मेशन ग्रिड यानी नैटग्रिड
नेशनल इन्फॉर्मेशन ग्रिड यानी नैटग्रिड एक आतंकवादी रोधी तंत्र है जो विभिन्न अन्वेषण एजेंसियों से प्राप्त डेटा को बिग डेटा इत्यादि जैसी अत्याधुनिक प्रौद्योगिकियों की सहायता से विश्लेषण करेगा।
इस डेटा तक देश की 10 विभिन्न सुरक्षा एजेंसियों एवं प्रवर्त्तन एजेंसियों की पहुंच होगी जो इससे जुड़े होंगे। 21 एजेंसियाें डेटा उपलब्ध कराएगी।
यह प्रोजेक्ट 2009 में 2800 करोड़ रुपए के आवंटन से आरंभ किया गया था।
केंद्रीय गृह राज्य मंत्री श्री जी. कृष्णा रेड्डी ने 19 नवंबर, 2019 को लोकसभा में बताया कि नैटग्रिड 31 दिसंबर, 2020 तक ऑपरेशनल हो जाएगा। प्रुफ ऑफ टेक्नोलॉजी (पीओटी) के लिए नैटग्रिड ने एप्लिकेशन विकसित कर लिया है।
