Recently, the distribution of green manure dhaincha (Thakkai Poondu), has commenced under the newly launched Chief Minister’s Mannuyir Kaathu Mannuyir Kaappom (MKMK) Scheme in Tamil Nadu.
- Dhaincha is cultivated in the field for Green Manuring purposes.
- Green Manuring is growing of field plants belonging to leguminous family and incorporating them into the soil after sufficient growth.
- Dhaincha is the most important green manure crop. The best stage at which the crop should be incorporated in the soil as a green manure is when it reaches the flowering stage i.e. 5 to 6 weeks old crop.
- The promotion of Green Manuring through Dhaincha is possible only in specific crop rotation system where the gap between harvesting and sowing of next crop is about two months.
