More than 15,000 migratory birds have died so far at the country’s largest inland water saltwater lake near Jaipur in Rajasthan due to botulism.
What is it?
Botulism- a paralytic disease is a natural toxin produced by a bacterium (Clostridium botulinum ) commonly found in the soil.
There are several types of botulism toxin some of which can affect humans who eat improperly canned foods.
Birds get their own kind of botulism (Type C) that does not affect humans. Botulism type C is concentrated in aquatic invertebrates that filter feed sediments or water. When birds eat the invertebrates, they get a concentrated package of toxin.
A bird-to-bird cycle can also exist where maggots feeding on dead birds can concentrate the toxin and can then be eaten by and poison other birds.
बोटुलिज्म
बोटुलिज्म एक प्राकृतिक जहर है जो आमतौर पर मिट्टी में पाया जाने वाला क्लोस्ट्रिडियम बोटुलिनम नामक बैक्टीरिया से कम ऑक्सीजन में उत्पादित होता है। इसकी कम मात्र ही पक्षियों को मार सकता है।
बोटुलिज्म टॉक्सिन के कई प्रकार हैं जिनमें से कई तो मानव को भी प्रभावित करता है खासकर जो लोग अव्यवस्थित डिब्बा बंद खाना खाते हैं। लेकिन पक्षियों का बोटुलिज्म अलग प्रकार का है जो मानव को प्रभावित करता है।
नवंबर 2019 में राजस्थान के सांभर झील के आसपास बोटुलिज्म की वजह से 4000 से अधिक प्रवासी पक्षियों की मौत हो गई थी।
