With the change in season and rise in temperature, culex or common house mosquitoes have made a reappearance across New Delhi, particularly in South and East Delhi.
- Culex mosquitoes compasses several species which are capable of transmitting diseases such as West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis. Japanese encephalitis is a potentially life-threatening but rare viral disease that causes “acute inflammation” of the brain. They breed in dirty, stagnant water.
- Adult, female mosquitoes lay eggs on the surface of fresh or stagnant water. Water sources can include barrels, horse troughs, ornamental ponds, unmaintained swimming pools, puddles, creeks, ditches, and marshy areas.
- Adult female mosquitoes bite people and animals. Mosquitoes need blood to produce eggs. Because Culex bite animals and people, they live outdoors or near homes.
