West Bengal Government will build memorial of Bhasha Shahid Barkat

West Bengal Government will build up a memorial of Bhasha Shahid Barkat at his residence at Babla village in Salar, Murshidabad.

  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made this announcement on 21 February 2022 at the function organized by the state government on the occasion of International Mother Language Day in Kolkata.

About Shahid Barkat

  • In 1952, when the language movement demanding recognition of Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan was at its height, Abdul Barkat was injured during the procession that students mobilised on the premises of the Dhaka Medical College hostel on 21 February. Later he died in hospital.
  • In 2000, he was awarded Ekushey Padak (posthumously) by the Bangladesh Government.
