Vindhyan Basin-9th producing Basin of India-

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is on its way to commercialize another Basin – the Vindhyan Basin. This would be the ninth producing Basin of India- the eighth by ONGC.

Well Hatta

  • This comes close on the heels of the eighth Indian Basin – the Bengal Basin (Ashoknagar-1) –dedicated to the nation on 20th December 2020.
  • Exploratory well Hatta#3 in Vindhyan Basin was drilled with the objective to establish commercial potential through detailed testing to acquire reservoir-specific data.
  • The Well Hatta#3 is in the Son valley sector of Madhya Pradesh. On testing, the well-produced over 62,044 cubic meters/day gas, thus confirming the production potential of Proterozoic Basin for the first time in India.

9 Hydrocarbon basins in India

  • Besides Vindhyan and Bengal, the other 7 basins are namely Krishna-Godavari (KG), Mumbai Offshore, Assam Shelf, Rajasthan, Cauvery, Assam-Arakan Fold Belt and Cambay.

About Vindhyan Basin

  • The Vindhyan basin is a classic example of Proterozoic intracontinental basin that developed in the central part of the Indian27 shield along with several other basins such as Cuddapah, Chattisgarh, etc.
  • The strata are exposed in three major sectors: Son valley, Bundelkhand and Rajasthan. Substantially thick Vindhyan rocks have also been recognized under the Gangetic alluvium.

About Hydrocarbons

  • A hydrocarbon is an organic compound consisting of only hydrogen and carbon atoms.
  • Hydrocarbons commonly occur in sedimentary basins and are absent from intervening areas of igneous and metamorphic rocks.
