Vincov-19-India’s first indigenous drug to treat COVID-19

India’s first indigenous drug to treat COVID-19 is likely to be made available to the public soon with the completion of clinical trials.

About Vincov-19

  • The drug ‘Vincov-19’ is a collaborative effort of CSIR-Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), University of Hyderabad (UoH) and Hyderabad-based VINS Bioproducts.
  • In this, the SARS-CoV-2 virus is inactivated and injected into horses.
  • The antibodies generated through the blood serum is synthesised and purified to be turned into a drug, which would then be injected into humans for neutralising the COVID virus.

About VINS bioproducts

  • VINS bioproducts company was set up in 1997, deals in developing life-saving antiserum or antidote against snake and scorpion bites as well as tetanus, diphtheria and rabies immunoglobulins.
  • The established company supplies the antiserum to over 70 countries as well as deals with international organisations like World Health Organisation, United Nations International Children’s Fund and United Nation Development Programme.
