The government is planning to open the villages along the Chinese border for tourists under the Vibrant Village programme (VVP), announced in the Union Budget 2022-23.
- Recently, a meeting was held with public representatives of such villages from the States of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Ladakh.
- Some villages in Ladakh such as those in Changthang region can be turned into dark sky destination that could attract astronomy enthusiasts.
Vibrant Village programme (VVP)
- To ensure the inclusion of northern border areas in the mainstream gains, the ‘New Vibrant Villages Programme’ has been announced in Union Budget 2022-23.
- The programme aims to enhance infrastructure in villages along India’s border with China, in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Arunachal Pradesh.
- The government wishes to supply all villages and their citizens with access to eservices, communication establishments, and digital resources.
- The Vibrant Village programme is a counter to China’s model villages in border areas.
- In the Vibrant Villages programme, schemes related to livelihood generation, road connectivity, housing, rural infrastructure, renewable energy, television and broadband connections will be be undertaken.
Dark Sky Sanctuary
- The Ladakh administration has decided to declare Hanle- a ‘Dark Sky Sanctuary’- in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics to promote Astro-tourism in the remote area of the union territory (UT).
