VAGIR: The fifth submarine of the Project – 75 delivered to the Indian Navy

The fifth submarine of the Project – 75, Kalvari Class submarines, Yard 11879 (VAGIR) was delivered to the Indian Navy on 20 Dec 22.

Key points

  • Project – 75 includes indigenous construction of six submarines of Scorpene design.
  • These submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with Naval Group, France.
  • VAGIR was launched on 12 Nov 20 and it commenced the sea trials from 01 Feb 22.
  • The six submarines were being built under Project-75 by the Mazagon Docks under technology transfer from the Naval Group as part of a $3.75-billion deal signed in October 2005.
  • INS Kalvari was commissioned in December 2017; INS Khanderi in September 2019; INS Vagir in November 2020; INS Karanjin March 2021;INS Vela in November 2021 and INS Vagsheer on April 20, 2022.
