The United States of America (USA) has said it will re-establish a Solomon Islands embassy as it attempts to curb China’s influence in the Pacific Island nation.

- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the decision to reopen the embassy while in Fiji on a tour of the region. It was the first visit by a US secretary of state to Fiji since 1985.

- The move comes several months after the Solomon Islands capital Honiara was rocked by riots sparked by economic problems and anti-China sentiment.
