The U.S., Canada and Norway have joined an European Union (EU) project aimed at quickening the flow of military personnel and equipment across the continent.
- It is the first time non-EU countries have been allowed into the initiative.
- The Military Mobility Initiative is just one of 46 military projects the EU launched as part of a 2017 pact reached between 25 EU member states, called Permanent Structured Cooperation (Pesco).
- The EU move will allow the three NATO countries to take part in a Dutch-led initiative to improve Europe’s military mobility.
- The task of ferrying troops and weapons around Europe in the event of an attack has been part of NATO’s defense calculus for decades, and the alliance maintains deft capabilities to that effect.
