Urjit Patel appointed chairman of National Institute of Public Finance and Policy

Shri Urjit Patel-former governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed as the chairman of the economic think tank National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) for four years.

His term as its chairperson for a four-year term will commence from June 22 2020. He will replace Vijay Kelkar.

Shri Patel has resigned from the post of governor of the Reserve Bank of Indiai n December 2018 . He served as a deputy governor under Raghuram Rajan succeeded him as RBI governor in September 2016.

About National Institute of Public Finance and Policy

New Delhi-based National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) is a centre for research in public economics and policies.

Founded in 1976, the institute undertakes research, policy advocacy and capacity building in areas related to public economics.

It is an autonomous research institute under the Ministry of Finance.

The institute was set up as an autonomous society, at the joint initiative of the Ministry of Finance, Planning Commission, several State governments and distinguished academicians. It is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

The chairman’s role is advisory in nature and he does not interfere in the day-to-day functioning of the institution.
