The Karnataka Chief Minister has said that the Central government had approved the proposal to declare the Upper Bhadra Project as a National Project.
- The Central Water Commission’s High Powered Steering Committee for implementation of National Projects has approved the state government proposal.
- The National Project status will ensure 60 per cent funding from the Centre for the project.
About the Upper Bhadra Project
- The Upper Bhadra project envisages lifting of 17.40 tmcft of water in the first stage from the Tunga river to Bhadra reservoir and lifting of 29.90 tmcft of water in the second stage from Bhadra reservoir to irrigate 2,25,515 hectares by micro-irrigation in Chitradurga, Davanagere, Tumakuru and parts of Chikkamagaluru.
- The project also envisages six tmcft of water for filling 367 tanks.
- Andhra Pradesh had objected to Karnataka’s proposal seeking National Project status to the Upper Bhadra Project (UBP). Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been utilizing the waters of Karnataka rivers.
Tunga River
- The Tunga River originates in the Western Ghats on a hill known as Varaha Parvata at a place called Gangamoola in Karnataka’s Chikmagalur district.
- Gangamoola lies within the Kudremukh National Park.
- The Tunga river merges with the Bhadra River at Koodli, a small town near Shimoga City, Karnataka. From here the river is given the compound name Tungabhadra.
