United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD) 2025

The United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD) was celebrated on March 3, 2025. The theme for World Wildlife Day (WWD) 2025 was “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet.”

  • National Board for Wildlife
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Gir National Park and his role in chairing the 7th meeting of the National Board for Wildlife emphasize the government’s dedication to protecting wildlife.
    • The meeting reviewed vital initiatives like Project Tiger, Project Elephant, and Project Snow Leopard, as well as new conservation strategies for species such as dolphins and Asiatic lions.
    • The establishment of the International Big Cats Alliance marks a forward-thinking approach to collaborative, international wildlife conservation.
  • Biodiversity in India:
    • Despite occupying only 2.4% of the Earth’s land, India is home to 7-8% of all known species, including over 45,000 types of plants and 91,000 types of animals.
    • With four of the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots—the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the Northeast region, and the Nicobar Islands—India plays a pivotal role in global conservation efforts.
  • Protected Area Network:
    • As of November 27, 2023, India’s network of 1014 Protected Areas (including 106 National Parks, 573 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 115 Conservation Reserves, and 220 Community Reserves) spans about 175,169.42 km² or roughly 5.32% of the country’s geographical area.
