Brigadier Amitabh Jha, who was serving as the Deputy Force Commander (DFC) of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights, has died due to medical reasons.
- He served as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) from April 2023.
- The Golan Heights, where Brigadier Jha was deployed, has been a region of heightened tensions in recent months.
- The area, monitored by UNDOF since 1974, is a buffer zone between Israel and Syria, established following the Yom Kippur War to prevent hostilities.
United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF)
- The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was established on 31 May 1974 by Security Council resolution 350 (1974), following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan.
- Since then, UNDOF has remained in the area to maintain the ceasefire between the Israeli and Syrian forces and to supervise the implementation of the disengagement agreement.
