The United Nations International Day of South-South Cooperation was celebrated on September 12 with the theme of “A better tomorrow through South-South Cooperation”.
- Celebration of the day annually on September 12, provides an opportunity for member states to reaffirm the value and benefits of South-South cooperation.
South-South cooperation initiatives
- The South-South cooperation is a manifestation of solidarity among peoples and countries of the South that contributes to their national well-being, their national and collective self-reliance and the attainment of internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
- The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) was created in 1974 to promote, coordinate and support South-South and triangular cooperation globally and within the United Nations system.
- UNOSSC is hosted by UNDP since 1974.
- In 1978 the conference of the Global South on TCDC was held in Buenos Aires, resulting in the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA) for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC).
