UN Adopts Resolution On Multilingualism, Mentions Hindi For First Time

The 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted an India-sponsored resolution on multilingualism on June 10, 2022.

  • The resolution promoted the UN’s Department of Global Communications to use both official and non-official languages, including Bangla, Hindi, and Urdu, in its communications.
  • It also mentioned languages like Portuguese, Kiswahili, and Persian.
  • While the UN has six official languages — English, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and French — the addition of Hindi, Bangla, and Urdu will instrumentalise and institutionalise their usage as mediums for disseminating UN information.
  • UNSC resolution 13(1) adopted in its first session on 1 Feb. 1946, which stated that the United Nations cannot achieve its purposes unless the people of the world are fully informed of its aims and activities.
  • A delegate may speak in any official UN language. The speech is interpreted simultaneously into the other official languages of the UN.
  • At times, a delegate may choose to make a statement using a non-official language. In such cases, the delegation must provide either an interpretation or a written text of the statement in one of the official languages.
  • Most UN documents are issued in all six official languages, requiring translation from the original document.
