United Kingdom (UK) has became the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine on December 2, 2020 for use.
- The British regulator Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) declared that the vaccine offers protection of up to 95 per cent and is safe to be used for immunisation against Covid-19.
- The COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized far more quickly than any other in history, its lightning development outpacing the 15 to 20 years it usually takes to develop these types of medicines.
- The UK Government has accepted the recommendation from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve Pfizer-BioNTechs COVID-19 vaccine for use.
- The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine — enough to vaccinate 20 million people.
- The Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at around -94 degrees Fahrenheit.
- The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine uses a piece of genetic material called messenger RNA (mRNA) to prompt the body to make synthetic pieces of the coronavirus and stimulate an immune response.
