Hong Kong’s Tsang Yin-Hung, 45, scaled the world’s highest peak Mount Everest in less than 26 hours, the shortest time taken by any woman after starting from the base camp.
- She has become the fastest woman to conquer Mount Everest.
- She beat the record set by Nepali woman Phunjo Jhangmu Lama in 2017, who climbed Everest in 39 hours and 6 minutes.
- Separately, Arthur Muir, 75, became the oldest American to climb the world’s highest peak at 8,848.86-metres (29,031 feet) on 23 May, 2021.
International Everest Day
- To commemorate the achievements of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, Nepal decided to celebrate International Everest Day every year on May 29.
- Mr Norgay and Mr Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11:30 AM on May 29,1953, but the world came to know of their achievement only on June 2, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.
- The day was observed for the first time in 2008, the year Edmund Hillary died.
