Time-out in cricket

The veteran Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews has become the first player in international cricket, men’s or women’s, to be dismissed through the “timed out” law in the Sri Lanka versus Bangladesh ODI World Cup match on November 6.

  • While the “time-out” is one of the oldest rules in the sport and has even been applied on rare occasions in domestic cricket across the world, this marks the first time that a batter had been dismissed in this fashion in the history of international cricket.
  • Rule 40.1.1: After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.
