Tata Steel commissions India’s first plant for CO2 capture

Tata Steel on September 15, 2021 commissioned a five tonnes per day (TPD) carbon capture plant at its Jamshedpur Works.

  • Tata Steel is India’s first steel company to adopt such a carbon capture technology that extracts CO2 directly from the Blast Furnace gas. Tata Steel will reuse the captured CO2 on-site to promote the circular carbon economy.

What is Carbon capture and storage (CCS)?

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) is a process consisting of the separation of CO2 from industrial and energy-related sources, transport to a storage location and long-term isolation from the atmosphere.
  • There are different types of CO2 capture systems: post combustion, pre-combustion and oxyfuel combustion.
  • The concentration of CO2 in the gas stream, the pressure of the gas stream and the fuel type (solid or gas) are important factors in selecting the capture system.
  • Most carbon capture focuses on cleaning emissions at the source: scrubbers and filters on smokestacks that prevent harmful gases reaching the atmosphere.
