Supreme Court sets up task force over students mental health concerns

The Supreme Court of India has established a 10-member National Task Force, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice S Ravindra Bhat, to tackle mental health issues affecting students in higher educational institutions.

Key Reasons Behind the Task Force Formation:

  • The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Report 2021 revealed over 13,000 student suicides, nearly double the number from 2015.
  • Student suicide rates increased by 4% in 2024 alone.
  • Rising concerns over ragging, academic pressure, discrimination, and mental health stigma in educational institutions.

Task Force Composition & Objectives:

  • Headed by: Justice S Ravindra Bhat (Retd. SC Judge).
  • Senior Advocate Aparna Bhat appointed as Amicus Curiae and task force member.
  • Key Focus Areas:
    • Review existing laws and regulations on ragging, discrimination, and sexual harassment.
    • Identify leading causes of student suicides, including:
      • Ragging & bullying
      • Academic stress & financial burdens
      • Mental health stigma
      • Discrimination (based on gender, caste, ethnicity, religion, disability, political views, sexual orientation, etc.)
    • Recommend preventive measures for institutions.
