Key Reasons Behind the Task Force Formation:
- The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Report 2021 revealed over 13,000 student suicides, nearly double the number from 2015.
- Student suicide rates increased by 4% in 2024 alone.
- Rising concerns over ragging, academic pressure, discrimination, and mental health stigma in educational institutions.
Task Force Composition & Objectives:
- Headed by: Justice S Ravindra Bhat (Retd. SC Judge).
- Senior Advocate Aparna Bhat appointed as Amicus Curiae and task force member.
- Key Focus Areas:
- Review existing laws and regulations on ragging, discrimination, and sexual harassment.
- Identify leading causes of student suicides, including:
- Ragging & bullying
- Academic stress & financial burdens
- Mental health stigma
- Discrimination (based on gender, caste, ethnicity, religion, disability, political views, sexual orientation, etc.)
- Recommend preventive measures for institutions.
