The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued an urgent warning:
- Supplies of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) will run out within two months in Ethiopia & Nigeria
- 1.3 million children under 5 at risk of losing access to lifesaving support in 2025
- Major cause: Funding cuts, worsened by the Trump administration’s foreign aid reductions
The Crisis in Numbers
- By May 2025, 70,000 children in Ethiopia alone could lose access to RUTF
- RUTF is essential for treating severe acute malnutrition (wasting)
- Without treatment, wasting significantly increases child mortality risk

- Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a high-energy, nutrient-dense paste used to rapidly rehabilitate children suffering from severe malnutrition.
