Noted author and philanthropist Sudha Murty was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India on International Women’s Day.
About Sudha Murty
- She is a graduate in Computer Science engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.).
- She was the first woman engineer at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO), which is now Tata Motors.
- She’s married to N. R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder, Infosys. She chaired the Infosys Foundation for over two decades.
- She is a renowned author and her books for children have been bestsellers.
- She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
- Her daughter Akshata Murthy is married to U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Nominated Members
- Under Article 80 (3) of the Constitution, out of the 245 members in the Rajya Sabha, 12 are nominated by the President on the recommendation of the government.
- According to the Article’s provisions, the nominated members should have special knowledge or practical experience in areas such as literature, science, art, and social service.
- A nominated member allowed to join a political party within the first six months of taking a seat.
- As per the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, a nominated member of a House shall be disqualified for being a member of the House if he joins any political party after the expiry of six months from the date on which he takes his seat.
- The nominated members are not eligible to vote in the President election, however, he/she is eligible to vote in the Vice-President election.
