The United States has lifted Sudan’s state sponsor of terrorism designation, on December 14, 2020, less than two months after the Arab nation pledged to normalise ties with Israel.
- Now only three countries remain in the list: the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), Iran, and Syria.
- The U.S. and Sudan reached an agreement in October 2020 for Sudan to be lifted from the list.
- The settlement required Sudan to pay $335 million for victims of the 1998 twin bombings against the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.
- President Donald Trump had announced in October 2020 that he was delisting Sudan, 27 years after the U.S. first put the country on its blacklist for harbouring Islamist militants.
