Sudan removed from US state sponsors of terrorism list

The United States has lifted Sudan’s state sponsor of terrorism designation, on December 14, 2020, less than two months after the Arab nation pledged to normalise ties with Israel.

  • Now only three countries remain in the list: the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), Iran, and Syria.
  • The U.S. and Sudan reached an agreement in October 2020 for Sudan to be lifted from the list.
  • The settlement required Sudan to pay $335 million for victims of the 1998 twin bombings against the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.
  • President Donald Trump had announced in October 2020 that he was delisting Sudan, 27 years after the U.S. first put the country on its blacklist for harbouring Islamist militants.
