The Tamil Nadu Government has released 14 announcements towards the Death Centenary of freedom fighter and poet Subramania Bharathi. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has said that his memorial day on September 11 will be called Mahakavi Day.
- The Chief Minister informed that an additional corpus fund of 130 crore rupees was also created thereby doubling the corpus from one lakh to two lakh rupees for each temple under the one-time puja scheme.
- The great poet Subramania Bharathi was born at Ettaiyapuram in Tuticorin district on December 11, 1882 and passed away on 11th September 1921 at Chennai. The 39-year old Bharathi’s passionate writings ignited a thirst among the youth to join the freedom movement.
- Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi is revered in Puducherry as he lived here for more than 11 years.
- He sought refuge in the French- governed Puducherry to evade possible arrest from the British forces as he was prosecuted on charges of sedition for his writings in the India Magazine.
- From Puducherry, he wrote patriotic songs and other literature to evoke the feelings of the Tamils to rise against the British Rule.
- ‘Mahakavi Bharatiyar`, a biography published in 1944 by the poet’s well known admirer and veteran Tamil writer-journalist, V. Ramaswamy Iyengar or Va. Ra in Tamil (1889-1951), remains as the most intimate portrait of Bharati. According to this book, Bharati was of the opinion that the First World War would bring many benefits to India.
