Nadubhagam Chundan wins Nehru Trophy after 67 years

  • On August 31, 2019 Nadubhagam Chundan, rowed by the Pallathuruthy Boat Club and led by N. Narayanan Kutty, lifted its second-ever Nehru Trophy.
  • It won the maiden race of the inaugural edition of the Champions Boat League (CBL) in a nail-biting finish on Punnamada Lake, clocking 4.25.83 minutes.
  • It was on Nadubhagam Chundan (snakeboat) that the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hopped on after the snakeboat came first in an exhibition race during his visit to in 1952. On his return to New Delhi, Nehru donated a silver trophy, a replica of a snakeboat. Nadubhagam Chundan was later declared the first winner of the famed Nehru Trophy.
  • Alappuzha hosted the 67th Nehru Trophy Boat Race this year. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, is conducted every year on the Punnamda Lake, near Alappuzha, on the second Saturday of August.
  • The 67th edition of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race was inaugurated by Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan opened the CBL in the presence of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac.
  • Hosted by Kerala Tourism, CBL is the country’s first-ever boat race on the lines of IPL.
