SpaceX on September 15, 2021 made history as it launched a crew of four private citizens on a jaunt around Earth. It was also the company’s 92nd booster recovery.
- The mission, called Inspiration4, blasted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Inspiration4 crew comprises four private citizens; Jared Issacman, Hayley Arceneaux, Sian Proctor and Chris Sembroski.
- The Inspiration4 was launched by the Falcon 9 rocket.
- The Inspiration4 venture was purchased from SpaceX by Mr Isaacman, 38, who made his fortune developing systems to process credit card payments.
- SpaceX and Inspiration4 have described the launch as the first “all-civilian mission to orbit”. However, some experts do not agree with this statement.
- They say that the first man to walk on the Moon, Neil Armstrong, was technically a civilian, having resigned his Navy commission in 1960, nine years before Apollo 11.
