South Korea becomes 10th country outside of Europe to join Europol

South Korea has became the 10th country outside of Europe to join the European Union (EU) law enforcement cooperation agency ‘Europol’.

  • Europol, established in 1992, is European Union’s law enforcement agency supporting the fight against terrorism, international drug trafficking and other serious crimes.
  • South Korea’s National Police Agency (NPA) joined Europol by signing a working-level agreement that was approved unanimously by the 27 EU nations on October 6, 2021.
  • Headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands, The EUROPOL support the 27 EU Member States in their fight against terrorism, cybercrime and other serious and organised forms of crime. We also work with many non-EU partner states and international organisations.
  • On 1 January 2010 Europol became a full EU agency. On 1 May 2017, Europol became officially the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, after its new Regulation entered into force.
