Sojat Mehndi awarded GI tag

Rajasthan’s Sojat Mehndi has bee awarded the geographical indication (GI) tag by the government. Sojat Mehndi originates from mehndi leaves grown in Sojat tehsil of the Pali district in Rajasthan.

  • Sojat Mehndi is fully naturally cultivated by rainwater for getting high lawsone-a red-orange dye present in the leaves, content in mehndi leaves.

About geographical indication (GI)

  • A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation. These are are part of the intellectual property rights that comes under the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.
  • GI registration is administered by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999. In India, GI tag is awarded by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks.
  • A GI tag is used for an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicraft and industrial goods) originating from a definite geographical territory.
