Sheikh Mujibur Rahman- Bangladesh’s father of the nation, has been named for the Gandhi Peace Prize 2020.
- The decision to confer the award for 2020 on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh, his first foreign trip since the outbreak of Covid-19. Tungipara is the place of birth of Mujibur Rahman.
- Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been awarded to recognizes the immense and unparalleled contribution in inspiring the liberation of Bangladesh, bringing stability to a nation born out of strife, laying the foundation for the close and fraternal relations between India and Bangladesh, and promoting peace and non-violence in the Indian subcontinent.
- The Gandhi Peace Prize carries an amount of one crore rupees, a citation, a plaque and an exquisite traditional handicraft item.
- It is an annual award instituted by Government since 1995, the 125th Birth Anniversary commemoration year of Mahatma Gandhi. The award is open to all persons regardless of nationality, race, language, caste, creed or sex.
- The Jury for Gandhi Peace Prize is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprises of two ex-officio members, namely the Chief Justice of India and Leader of the single largest Opposition Party in Lok Sabha.
