A joint team of scientists from DRDO and IIT Delhi, for the first time in the country successfully demonstrated Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link between Prayagraj and Vindhyachal in Uttar Pradesh, a distance of more than 100 kilometres.
- With this success, the country has demonstrated indigenous technology of secure key transfer for bootstrapping military-grade communication security key hierarchy.
- This technology will enable security agencies to plan a suitable quantum communication network with indigenous technology backbone.
What is Quantum key distribution (QKD)?
- Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a family of protocols for growing a private encryption key between two parties.
- The security of Quantum key distribution is not based on the computational hardness of solving mathematical problems, but on physical processes that are not vulnerable to powerful computers.
- The property, known as ‘forward security’, makes it an ideal solution to ensure the secrecy of sensitive data that must be kept confidential for long periods of time.
- Since QKD is primarily an optical technology, it has the ability to automate the delivery of encryption keys between any two points that share an optical link.
