Music composer and santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, 84, who was on regular dialysis, died at his Pali Hill residence in Mumbai on May 10.
- A symbol of the Shaivite and Sufi tradition of Jammu and Kashmir, the Padma Vibhushan awardee Pandhit Sharma gave the santoor global recognition.
- Sharma began learning music from his father, classical vocalist Uma Dutt Sharma, who worked as a music supervisor at Radio Kashmir in Jammu and later, Kashmir.
- Once Uma Dutt was transferred to Radio Kashmir (Srinagar), he suggested that a teenage Sharma try his hand at the santoor.
- He was one half of the composer duo Shiv-Hari and composed music with flute legend Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia for films such as Silsila (1981), Lamhe (1991) and Chandni (1989), among others.
- He was conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, Padma Shri in 1991, and Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
