BJP’s S. Phangnon Konyak was elected unopposed as the Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland. She became the first woman from the Nagaland to get a berth in Parliament’s Upper House.
- To be sure, Nagaland is yet to elect a woman MLA even after 58 years of statehood.
- Konyak is the state unit’s BJP mahila morcha president. Konyak, who is the state BJP women’s wing chief, has become the second woman Member of Parliament from Nagaland in 45 years.
- Rano M Shaiza was the first. She was elected to Lok Sabha in 1977.
- Prior to joining BJP in 2017, Konyak, who holds a masters degree in English Literature from Delhi University (batch of 2002), has been involved in student activism and social organizations.
- Her elevation to the Upper House is seen as a bigger political statement, partly because she belongs to the Konyak community.
- Thirteen of her tribesmen were killed in a botched ambush by an elite unit of the Army and subsequent violence at Oting on December 4 and 5, 2021.
