The Odisha government’s revival of the Pipalapanka Dam proposal in Ganjam district has sparked protests from environmentalists and local communities over potential ecological consequences.
Key Issues & Concerns
🔹 Threat to Rushikulya River:
- The Pipalapanka forest is the primary water source for the Rushikulya River, a lifeline for Ganjam district.
- Past damming of its tributaries (Jarau, Badanadi, Baghua, Dhanei, Ghodahada) has weakened river flow from Nov–June.
🔹 Impact on Olive Ridley Turtles:
- The Rushikulya beach is a crucial mass nesting site for the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles.
- In early 2025, a record 700,000 turtles nested on the beach, highlighting the region’s ecological significance.
🔹 History of the Project:
- Initially proposed in 1996 to supply water for Tata Steel’s planned steel plant in Chhatrapur.
- The revival of the project raises concerns over water scarcity, ecological damage, and impact on local livelihoods.
