Royal Bengal tiger sighted in Buxa tiger reserve

A Royal Bengal tiger has been sighted first time in 23 years in the Buxa reserve in Airpurduar district in north Bengal. The forest department shared a camera trap picture of the tiger spotted at the East Damanpur range of the tiger reserve.

  • Experts believe that a favourable habitat at the tiger reserve would invite more tigers, which had migrated to neighbouring Bhutan. The state shares a contiguous range of the protected area with Bhutan.
  • Buxa Tiger Reserve is situated in the Alipurduar Sub-division of Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal. The Reserve stretches over a length of 50 km from West to East and 35 km from North to South.
  • The East it has linkages with the Kochugaon forests, Manas Tiger Reserve and on the West with the Jaldapara National Park.
  • Indian Tiger or Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is found in India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
  • Due to their large body size tigers are not good tree climbers like leopards. They can only climb along large leaning trees. But tigers are excellent swimmers and love water. Tigers are known to swim between islands in the Sunderbans.
