According to a recent report, one woman died, and four others became ill in West Bengal after reportedly receiving expired Ringer’s Lactate (RL).
What is Ringer’s Lactate (RL)?
- RL is a commonly used intravenous (IV) fluid administered to patients experiencing fluid loss due to medical conditions.
- RL is a sterile crystalloid solution composed of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and lactate.
- It is widely used for various medical scenarios, including treating patients with burn injuries, trauma cases, post-operative blood loss, Cesarean section deliveries, and other critical conditions.
- As a crystalloid solution, RL contains small, dissolved molecules that can easily move from the bloodstream into tissues and cells, making it effective in rehydrating the body and restoring fluid balance.
- Dehydration occurs when the body, which is approximately 60% water, lacks adequate fluid levels. This condition can result from surgery, injuries, burns, or prolonged exposure to heat, and it may necessitate IV fluids like RL to restore hydration.
- Proper storage and timely use of IV fluids are crucial to ensuring patient safety and preventing adverse outcomes.
