A decade after the revival of Nalanda University, efforts are now underway to restore another ancient centre of learning—Vikramshila University in Bhagalpur, Bihar.
Key Developments
- Archaeological Site Development: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been enhancing the Vikramshila site since December 2024 to boost tourism and preserve its rich history.
- New University on Identified Land: The Bihar government has allocated 202.14 acres in Antichak village, Bhagalpur, for the establishment of a Central University dedicated to Vikramshila. The project, approved in 2015 with ₹500 crore funding, had been delayed due to land identification issues.
Historical Significance of Vikramshila Mahavira
- Founded in the Late 8th – Early 9th Century AD by Pala King Dharmapala.
- Specialized in Tantric and Occult Studies – Unlike Nalanda, which focused on varied disciplines, Vikramshila was known for Tantrayana Buddhism.
- Connection with Nalanda – Both universities had knowledge exchanges and shared scholars (Acharyas).
- Produced Eminent Scholars – Among them, Atisa Dipankara, who played a key role in spreading Buddhism in Tibet.
- Architectural Marvel – The university had a brick stupa surrounded by 208 monk cells, where student-monks studied Tantrayana Buddhism.
